Artist Statement: In pieces she comes, whole she leaves. This painting consist of hundreds of threads sewn ‘round synthetic hair into canvas. Her hair is an extension of herself, it protects and guides her. “I come in piece” takes on a satirical mood as the figure understands what it means to have type 4 hair in todays society. Terms like “foreign” and “exotic” push the figure to associate with alien-like and alienated imagery. Yet she challenges the viewer to see her as more than “unruly” and “untamed”.
